Nobody Tells Business Owners This... The Business You Built May Eventually Require a Different Version of You.

Nobody tells you this when you start a business.

In the beginning, you do what needs to be done.

You answer the phone.

You handle the customers.

You solve the problems.

You make the decisions.

You wear every hat because there really isn’t anyone else to wear them.

And honestly?

That version of you is probably the reason the business survived.

But eventually, something changes.

The business gets bigger.

The decisions matter more.

More people are counting on you.

And the way you’ve always done things starts feeling harder than it used to.

Sometimes we assume that means something is wrong.

Maybe we’ve lost our drive.

Maybe we’re not as good at this as we thought.

Maybe the business has gotten too big.

But I don’t think that’s always what’s happening.

Sometimes the business has simply outgrown the version of you that built it.

That can be uncomfortable.

Because the person who got the business here was willing to do everything.

The person who takes it further may have to stop.

Stop answering every question.

Stop fixing every mistake.

Stop being involved in every decision.

Stop measuring your value by how much the business needs you.

And that can feel strange when being needed has been part of your identity for so long.

Growth doesn’t only ask your business to change.

It asks you to change too.

To trust more.

Delegate more.

Think further ahead.

Make decisions before you have every answer.

And sometimes let other people do things differently than you would have done them.

That part might be harder than any growth strategy.

There may come a point when working harder isn’t the answer anymore.

Because the business doesn’t need more of the old version of you.

It needs the next one.

And becoming that person can feel awkward for a while.

That’s okay.

You’re learning too.

Nobody tells business owners this.

The person who was perfect for starting the business may not be the exact same person needed to lead what it becomes.

That doesn’t mean you’ve lost yourself.

It means you’re growing alongside the thing you built.
